Some types of dog barking episodes-from too much excitement playing; from seeing you come home; from feeling the need to protect the property; or from an attempt to bully for for attention, are easily corrected by using your voice to calm your dogs down-and not really problems to worry about. You will have some work to do to correct any of these dog barking problems from the list below if your dog has one of them. Unfortunately, excessive barking is a problem that takes some work to solve.
Here are some examples of barking problem behaviors and some ways to correct these types of dog barking problems-use the tips that are appropriate to your own dog’s behavior problem.
- To correct the problem of dogs barking upon seeing a stranger or another dog somewhere within their visual range, it is necessary to block your dog’s view out of his yard. If you have a fenced in area with no view to the outside, this would be the ideal place to move your noise-offender. If you don’t have any fenced areas, try putting your dog on a lead and keeping him in a part of the yard with no outside view. If your dog stays indoors, keep the curtains closed to block his view.
- One method of solving the problem of your dog barking in response to neighborhood dogs, is by taking the matter into your own hands-literally. For example, when your dog begins his response barking, immediately shut his mouth using your hand, and make sure to hold it shut until he relaxes and stops trying to bark. He won’t be liking this much, so you will have to hold onto his collar while you do this because he may try to move away from you. Another good trick that will startle him out of barking is to spray him in the face with a small blast of water from a little spray bottle. A can of pebbles is also good for startling your dog into stopping the barking for a bit. Any of these three ideas should stop the barking-at least while you are using them. While you do any of these tricks to stop him from barking, you must also tell your dog something like “quiet” or “no barking” to verbally imprint the command to your dog. The end result should be that just by saying “quiet” you should have the ability to control your dog’s barking problems.
- You can correct this anxiety type of behavior by giving your dog a lot of attention-play, train and exercise with him daily. An active, well trained dog is much happier, so by increasing his quality of life, he will be less nervous and less likely to bark out of anxiety or stress.
- Correcting the problem of bored and lonely dog voicing their frustrations with non stop barking can be done by giving your dog lots of exercise and attention. Obviously if your dog is left alone most of the time and doesn’t get enough playtime and attention from you he is more likely to have this type of barking problem. By giving your dog at least one and a half hours daily exercise, you will help a lot with his feelings of loneliness and boredom, and hopefully cut way down on his need to bark for long periods of time.
- In order to deal with the problem of your dog barking excessively at you as he tries to get your attention (whether for food, play, or affection) you should say “no” firmly, then turn your back towards him and ignore your dog. Don’t let your dog bully you into doing whatever he wants. There is a good reason for this-in addition to the annoying barking, you need to be the Alpha dog here-not him. Your dog will not give you the respect you need to be the Alpha dog, if he is able to bully you around with his barking. You need to be the Alpha in order to get good results with your training
You can also find some types of barking prevention collars at the pet store. The first of these prevention collars is a Citronella oil collar-this works by spraying a mist of citronella oil into your dogs face when it is activated by the dog’s barking. The second type of collar works by emitting a very high pitched sound . Either the smell or the noise is designed to stop the barking through aversion therapy.
There is even a collar that prevents barking through the application of electric shock. Frequently dog trainers have found success using these when other methods have failed with a very headstrong or stubborn dog.
